Vaccines minister Maggie Throup has condemned “threats and intimidation” against school staff, following reports of school leaders facing backlash over vaccinations for teenagers, Schools Week reports.
Ms Throup spoke out in a Westminster Hall debate, adding that schools should “not be afraid to speak to the police” if they faced intimidation over hosting vaccinations for 12 to 15-year-olds.
Shadow health minister Liz Kendall also told the Westminster Hall debate of “deeply concerning and troubling incidents” in her Leicester West constituency.
“I am appalled that some of our headteachers have received threats via letters and on social media including threats of legal action and even death threats accusing the heads of supposedly promoting illegal medical experimentation on children.
“This is disgraceful and completely unacceptable.”
According to guidance from the UK Health Security Agency on the vaccination programme, legal responsibility for delivery of Covid-19 vaccines to children and young people sits with the School Age Immunisation Service and not with the school.
