The International Baccalaureate will eventually move to digital exams that could even be sat in virtual reality, The Times reports.
Olli-Pekka Heinonen, the director-general of the IB, said the move was one of his top priorities, although no timeline has been set for the switch.
Heinonen said the online world presented opportunities to assess students in new ways better suited to the workplace and the modern world.
At the global conference of the International Baccalaureate in the Hague last week, Heinonen said he expected schools to be given a choice of digital or paper-based exams at first.
He told The Times: “The paper assessments will be there for the interim period, but I also see that there is a time when we will move to a digital environment — having both, I don’t think that that period will be continuing for ever. There will be a moment when there’s a shift.”
“It’s not like, once we have the digital assessment ready, the next day, we will abandon paper. There will be a moment for the schools under different kinds of systems to adapt to the situation.”
