Merchiston Castle School’s soon-to-be-launched forest school has announced Davina Bowers as its new head teacher.
Ms Bowers moves on from Edinburgh Academy to lead Merchiston’s The Forest Nursery and The Forest Junior School.
Previously head of nursery and pre-prep at Cargilfield School before moving to Edinburgh Academy in 2018, Davina brings 18 years of experience in early years education to her new position at Merchiston.
A qualified forest school practitioner and founder of Cando Beach School, she was also responsible for establishing the outdoor learning provision for Edinburgh Academy. It was this experience and expertise that won Bowers the position.
Opening in September 2024, The Forest Nursery will be open to girls and boys from ages 3-5, while the Forest Junior School will accept years P1-P3.
Ms Bowers said: “I am honoured to have been appointed head teacher of The Forest at Merchiston and excited to pave the way for an unparalleled educational experience in the most beautiful natural setting in Edinburgh.
“I am very much looking forward to meeting all our Forest Pioneers, and to bringing the holistic and nurturing Forest approach to local children and their families.”
Jonathan Anderson, headmaster of Merchiston Castle School, said of Davina’s appointment:
“With her impressive resumé, vast teaching experience, and immense passion for early years education, Davina is the perfect candidate to lead The Forest. I have no doubt that she will deliver the very best for our Forest Pioneers.”
The fully co-educational Forest at Merchiston is due to open in September 2024. The Forest Nursery is open to ages 3 to 5 and The Forest Junior School is open to P1-P3. Rolling admissions will then take place with the aim of the Junior school becoming fully co-ed by 2030.
Merchiston Castle Senior School is Scotland’s only all-boys independent boarding and day school for boys aged 12-18.
