The Compass School is an independent primary school in East Lothian for girls and boys from pre-school (nursery) to Primary Seven.

Applications are invited from suitably experienced, talented and committed candidates for the post of School Bursar and Company Secretary, which will become tenable from the start of February 2024 due to the retirement of the current post holder.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the leadership and management of the School, in enabling the School to achieve its strategic vision in the areas of Human Resource Management, Finance, Digital Technology, Governance, Health and Safety and the School Estate. As Company Secretary, he/she will ensure that School and its Board of Governors comply with all relevant company law and the requirements of the Office of The Scottish Charities Regulator.

We are seeking a well-qualified, experienced and motivated manager who wishes to make full use of his/her talents and enthusiasm, in working as part of a dedicated and professional team and who can demonstrate leadership and the management potential for the role.

The post is part-time being 20 hours a week during term time and for a total of 44 weeks in the year. During the School holidays there will be a requirement to be available to oversee any maintenance work conducted in the school building/grounds. The annual salary allows for a total of five weeks in addition to term-time working for this purpose.

 

The Bursar and Company Secretary is responsible for providing a comfortable and safe environment for children, staff, parents and visitors.

The key responsibilities of the Bursar are as follows:

  • To manage the day to day running of the School building, including all matters of a maintenance and liaison with the School’s Handyman and outside contractors
  • To manage the School’s catering provision which includes the School Chef and his staff
  • To manage the School’s cleaning provision which includes the cleaning supervisor and staff
  • To manage the School’s digital technology infrastructure
  • To manage the security of the school building
  • To manage the School’s Health and Safety Policy and Procedures
  • To manage the School’s Fire Systems, Policies and Procedures
  • To manage the School’s systems of risk assessment
  • To carry out domestic staff reviews and ensure professional development
  • To manage the School’s finances, including, in conjunction with the School’s Accountant, the preparation of forward projections, financial budgets and monthly management accounts
  • To advise the Headteacher in matters relating to employment documentation and policies
  • To write and implement relevant polices as necessary relating to the above functions of the School
  • To manage the School’s transport provision (currently a minibus and a people-carrier) which includes the school driver
