Maple Hayes Dyslexia School: Design Technology Teacher

Job Description

Maple Hayes is a special school for up to 120 boys and girls with specific learning difficulties (dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia) from KS2 to KS4, following an appropriately modified national curriculum.

Due to retirement, we are seeking a passionate and dynamic Design Technology Teacher. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Design Technology, with the ability to inspire students and promote excellence in their learning. The post would suit an enthusiastic and motivated classroom practitioner who can enthuse the learning of children with Specific Learning Difficulties. The role demands the flexibility to incorporate the school’s literacy programme into their subject’s work for which the school will provide appropriate training. It is not a requirement for the candidate to have any prior training in teaching dyslexics. Class sizes in school generally range from 10 to 12 pupils.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver engaging and interactive Design Technology lessons that cater to the diverse needs and abilities of students.
  • Teach a range of Design Technology subjects, including but not limited to Product Design, Graphics, Resistant Materials, and Textiles.
  • Foster a creative and innovative learning environment that encourages experimentation, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
  • Use a variety of teaching methods and resources to enhance student understanding and achievement.
  • Assess student progress effectively through formative and summative assessments, providing constructive feedback to support their development.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, and achievement, in line with school policies.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and implement cross-curricular projects and initiatives.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and school events as required.
  • Additional whole school responsibilities may be available.
  • There may be a requirement to take on responsibility for a form group and the school’s literacy programme is delivered in the first lesson of each weekday and attending one timetabled driver literacy lesson with the class during the week with participation. Teachers are required to keep appropriate records of pupil progress and work done, and will also contribute to reports for annual reviews of individual pupils’ EHC Plans.

The rates of pay are above Main Scale with a significant discretionary pay award which, in part, reflects involvement in extra-curriculum activities and attendance.

The position, which is subject to a Disclosure (DBS), is available from September 2024 and would suit an energetic and enthusiastic teacher.
