Host Delyth Lynch reaches the letter “F” in the alphabet, and turns her attentions to Felsted School in Essex, where she meets Nicola O’Brien, designated safeguarding lead at the boarding and day school.
Nicola talks about her career as a languages teacher at Bloxham then Oundle schools before arriving at Felsted.
She also talks about the personal impact of the dramatic fire at Felsted in 2012 where a boarding house burnt down and Nicola and her family also lost their home.
She explains how those working in safeguarding are often able to draw on their own experiences of trauma to better understand the needs of young people going through difficult times.
The podcast concludes with Nicola expressing her gratitude for waking up in the morning to a job she enjoys that is interesting, stimulating and worthwhile, and she reveals how her “hilarious” children keep her going through the toughest of days.
