In this latest episode, Delyth Lynch “travels” to Jersey in the Channel Islands, to meet Simon Milner, assistant head and designated safeguarding lead at Jersey College for Girls.
Simon describes how he grew up in Jersey, departing only briefly for his university years and returning to the island to begin his teacher training. He initially taught English and was head of department before becoming more and more interested in pastoral work while head of sixth form.
He also talks about the challenges of working on a small island with a tight-knit community where “nothing seems remote” and more people than expected can easily be affected by an issue or incident.
He talks about employing the key skill of patience and the importance of investing in teams in safeguarding and not letting one person take all the responsibility on their shoulders.
